  • The peer support program is a form of youth peer support that takes place at school and is in line with the activities of the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare.
  • The goal of the peer support program is to promote considerate behavior, increase youth participation in school, prevent problems, and foster the creation of a safe and accepting atmosphere.
  • The theme of school peace for the 2020-2021 school year is equality. Everyone at school should be able to be themselves. All are equal, regardless of their background or characteristics. The slogan of the school peace year, “Hand in Hand,” reminds us of the importance of supporting friends. If you can’t hold hands, you can smile, be kind, or send encouraging messages.
  • Our school has a group of 9th graders who act as peer supporters. The peer supporters work primarily with 7th graders, helping them get to know the school already in the spring of 6th grade, holding mentoring sessions for them, and participating in a team-building day at the beginning of 7th grade.
  • Other forms of activity include organizing various theme days and events, morning assemblies, and assisting at parent evenings.
  • To become a peer supporter, one must be substance-free, fair, and well-behaved, as well as choose the peer support course as an elective in both 8th and 9th grades, separately for each year.
  • Peer supporters receive a certificate from the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare for their work.

  • The aim is to increase student participation in the school community through the activities of the student council.
  • The student council consists of all students in the school, while the student council board is a democratically elected body that leads the student council.
  • The student council board develops the advocacy skills of its members. Its task is also to enhance school well-being and support a conducive learning environment.
  • The purpose of the cooperation between the student council and teachers is to further improve our school’s atmosphere and to seek to increase the opportunities for young people to influence both in our school’s daily life and in society. The activities of the student council board are thus also part of citizenship and democracy education.
  • Members of the Turengin Yhteiskoulu student council and our school’s students participate in the activities of the Youth Council, and each year we also participate in the VaTi day organized by the municipality’s youth services and education department, known as “Influence Tuesday.” The idea of the day is that young people can ask predetermined questions directly to the municipality’s decision-makers in the council chamber.
  • During the school year, the student council’s activities include organizing various events and theme days. These have included, for example, Halloween day, May Day celebrations, and the 9th-grade gala.
  • Generally, the students in the student council board are actively involved in planning and implementing all events held at our school.
  • Our school’s students have the opportunity to express their opinions on matters affecting all students. For this reason alone, the student council’s collaborators, in addition to the youth service and high school student council, include our school’s principal, teachers, and teams composed of teachers throughout the school year.
