Upper secondary education is proposed to be moved to Tavastia

Janakkala’s education committee will, in its meeting on September 2, 2026, be asked to decide on a proposal that the municipality’s permit to organize upper secondary education be transferred to the Tavastia Education Consortium (Koulutuskuntayhtymä Tavastia) as of January 1, 2028.

With the upper secondary school review carried out this year in Janakkala, factors affecting future upper secondary education were mapped, such as changes in pupil numbers, financial aspects, the quality and availability of teaching, administration, legislation and state steering, and long-term planning.

The aim of the proposed transfer of the organising permit is to secure high-quality upper secondary school teaching and Janakkala’s attractiveness also in the future. The change is seen as offering particularly broader cooperation and course provision as well as the resources and support services of a larger organization.

A possible transfer would not decide the fate of the upper secondary school’s campuses, as decisions on that would remain in the municipality’s own hands.

Janakkala upper secondary school operates at two campuses, in Tervakoski and Turenki.
In Turenki, the school’s new premises are tied to the planning of the second phase of the school campus. The transfer of the organizing permit brings more options for premises solutions. For this reason, a decision must be made so that the planning of the school campus can proceed.

The transfer of the organizing permit will still be submitted to the municipal executive and the municipal council for decision.
