There are 15 natural monuments in Janakkala
Last summer the environmental protection trainee mapped all of Janakkala’s natural monuments. The survey examined whether the site is intact and whether it is properly marked. Some could no longer be found and some of the sites will be re-marked. There are currently 15 protected natural monuments.
Janakkala’s natural monuments are mainly trees, but there are also a few rock formations. According to section 95 of the Nature Conservation Act (9/2023), a natural monument may be designated as a tree, a group of trees, a glacial erratic or another natural formation. Protection can be based on the site’s beauty, rarity, scenic significance, scientific value or other similar reasons.
Janakkala’s first natural monument was protected in 1959. Most of the municipality’s natural monuments were protected in the 1960s. Protection has been discontinued for some over the years, for example when a tree died. In particular, 1965 appears to have been a wave of monument protections, after which subsequent monuments were not protected until the 1980s and a few also in the 1990s. Regarding the protection of monuments, the early 2000s were quieter, until after 2024 several protection applications have been submitted.
The natural monuments have now been compiled on our website.
If you know of a significant natural site, instructions for applying for protection can be found here.
