Media education – teaching about media and through media
At Tervakoski Community School, specialized media education is provided in the so-called media classes. In grades 7-9, media class students study two media modules each year. All 6th-grade students from the municipality of Janakkala can apply for the media class. More information about applying for the media class for the 2023-2024 school year.
What do we do in media classes?
In media classes, the aim is to articulate and understand the role of media, its effects, and possibilities. The areas covered include practicing media interpretation skills and media criticism, examining one’s relationship with media, media production, information retrieval, and communication skills.
Why do we have media?
The goal is to strengthen media skills: to support young people’s ability to interpret and analyze media and encourage self-expression and social influence through media. This supports youth agency and participation, social well-being, provides motivation and courage, and increases confidence in their own abilities.
Media is contemporary!
In media classes, the side effects of social media are addressed, media education is a good tool for teamwork, and media assignments teach and develop creativity and ingenuity. Media is a motivating and versatile tool for teaching various subjects. Media education is fun! Through media assignments, students learn visual perception, different narrative techniques, self-expression, and it brings out new skills and aspects of youth.
Practically, studying is a combination of planned media education content, creative media activities, and spontaneous encounters and discussions about media content. In Tervakoski, the emphasis of media education is in film education, and the working environment also includes Kino Tervakoski.
As a media teacher in media classes, the visual arts educator Katja Luoto is in charge.
