The Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation has compiled good safety instructions for winter swimming:
When plunging into cold water, it’s important to remember basic safety rules and appropriate gear.
- Swimming gear and shoes for moving around are sufficient. You can also purchase neoprene shoes and gloves designed for the sport from sports stores. Wearing a headgear is recommended.
- Always take a buddy with you for your swimming trip.
- Warm up your muscles before swimming with exercise. Skiing or Nordic walking are good options.
- Cold water affects different people in various ways, so everyone should learn their suitable time for swimming in cold water and the number of visits.
- During your first visit, it’s advisable just to dip in the cold water. Coldness may cause harmless but uncomfortable breathlessness. You will get used to it over time, and the duration can then be extended.
- The temperature difference between the hole in the ice and the sauna is significant. This puts a strain on the heart, and fluctuations in blood pressure can cause dizziness.
- Cold water stiffens quickly, so it’s important to constantly monitor muscle function.
- Do not jump into the cold water headfirst. It is not recommended to even wet your head, as this increases the risk of hypothermia.
- After swimming, warm up gradually, dress warmly, and enjoy a warm drink if necessary.
- Follow the instructions of the winter swimming place.
- A good winter swimming place has a warm changing area in addition to the hole in the ice.
- Do not enter the hole in the ice/cold water under the influence of alcohol, when sick, feverish, or otherwise unwell. If you suffer from heart and vascular diseases, discuss starting winter swimming with a doctor.
- Consider in advance how to summon help. In an emergency, call the emergency number 112 immediately.
- Swimming in cold water accelerates metabolism and can easily lead to dehydration. After swimming, it’s advisable to drink calmly 2.5 deciliters of water for each minute spent in the ice hole.
NOTE!
Children can also swim in cold water, but they must be closely monitored. The shock caused by cold water can lead a panicked child, and even an adult, to forget their swimming skills.
