The closure process of Haukankallio and Tanttala schools

The Janakkala Education Board decided on 9th October 2024 to start the closure processes for Tanttala and Haukankallio schools.
Information and consultation events will be organized in October for the guardians of students and others concerned:
Tanttala School: 24th October at 17:30 – 19:00, Tanttala School
Haukankallio School: 31st October at 17:30 – 19:00, School Center Välkky, Turenki

At the events, plans for the transfer of students to other schools and the organization of special education in the future will be presented. In Välkky, guardians will also have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the facilities built for special education. Guardians can also ask questions and express their opinions on the matter.

The school centers have specially designed facilities for special education, including many small group rooms, sensory rooms, and their own entrances. The location of the unit within the building has also been carefully considered so that movement around the school is not necessary. The cafeteria has a cabinet for quiet dining. Attention has been particularly paid to acoustics in the school centers. Children needing special education are not integrated into general education groups, but special education continues in their own small groups. In connection with the planned change, the needs of all students in Janakkala requiring special support will be assessed.

Opinions regarding the closure of both schools can be submitted on the Otakantaa.fi service until 7th November 2024. The service includes a proposal for new school district divisions concerning Tanttala School. Commenting requires a login.

The closure plans are based on the decisions of the council, and the final decision is also made by the council. In June 2024, it was confirmed that the school in Janakkala will be closed when its number of students is below 28 for two consecutive years and the forecast for the following year remains below 28 students. Tanttala School had 26 students in 2023, 24 students in 2024, and the forecast for 2025 is 21 students.
The special school operating in Leppäkoski has also been outlined to begin preparations for its closure when the new school centers are completed.
