The school nurse participates in the promotion of the well-being and health of the entire school community. She supervises and promotes the healthiness and safety of school working conditions and schoolwork. In individual student welfare, the school nurse monitors, assesses, and promotes the student’s well-being and health. She also participates in identifying and resolving problems related to learning, emotional life, and behavior in collaboration with other student welfare and teaching staff.
The school counselor is the social worker of the school. The counselor’s services are free and confidential. The goal of the school counselor’s work is to support students’ mental and social well-being, prevent problems, and ensure the conditions for attending school. The counselor can be approached regarding issues such as behavioral problems, social relationship issues, problems arising in the student’s family, and emotional and mental health issues.
The youth psychologist helps with issues related to psychological growth, development, learning, and mental health. The youth psychologist serves those aged 13-19. A student can seek an appointment with the psychologist either on their own initiative or guided by another staff member. The student or guardian can book an appointment by calling the psychologist at the designated appointment times. The psychologist’s office is located at the Turenki health center on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and at the Tervakoski health center on Thursdays.
Psychologists, counselors, and school nurses are part of the service network of the family center and have close ties to all services for children, youth, and families. If necessary, they can advise and direct to services and collaborate with all parties involved. Through the family center, family members are directed to specialized services.
The purpose of special education at the high school is to support students facing various learning challenges. The special education teacher is part of student welfare and collaborates with the student, teachers, guardians, and other necessary parties. A student can be supported through individualized teaching, group courses/units, reading assessments, and diverse collaboration. The aim is to assist the student with study techniques, reading and writing strategies, and other supportive actions. Students are encouraged to raise their concerns with ease, and the special education teacher is one suitable contact for this purpose.
At the beginning of their studies, students complete a reading screening and initial survey. The reading screening aims to identify possible reading and writing challenges. Based on the results, some students may be offered the opportunity to enroll in a reading course/credit unit, which serves as one form of support. If necessary, a subsequent individual test may be arranged for the student to assess potential reading difficulties and their severity. The purpose of the initial survey is to gather information about the student’s own experiences as a learner and to identify concerns, challenges, and strengths.
The purpose of guidance counseling at Janakkala High School is to support students’ progress in their high school studies and the completion of the high school curriculum and the matriculation examination, to develop students’ knowledge and skills to consider and make decisions regarding further studies, professional careers, and life paths, and to provide students with resources for self-awareness development.
Students have the opportunity to receive support teaching from subject teachers. Support teaching is primarily provided in languages and mathematics. The teacher arranges the details of support teaching with the student. Support teaching usually takes place outside of regular class hours.
The class supervisor is an important person in the student’s daily life and a key figure in cooperation between home and school.
Targeted parent meetings are held for each grade level, where, in collaboration with the teaching staff and student body, matters related to high school, the academic year, and the specific grade level are discussed. The first grade parent meeting is held after the first period’s assessment. The third grade parent meeting is held in November, and the second grade parent meeting in April.
Guardians have the opportunity to monitor the student’s academic performance and progress through Wilma. Wilma serves as a key communication tool between home and school. Important and timely announcements (e.g., weekly notices) are published in Wilma.
