The municipality now has its own WhatsApp channel — join as a follower!

The municipality of Janakkala established its own WhatsApp channel in October 2026. WhatsApp users can follow the municipality’s channel and react to messages posted there, but they cannot reply to the messages. Subsribe to the channel’s here (Messages to the channel are written in Finnish).

The WhatsApp channel is intended for everyone interested in Janakkala and the affairs of the municipality of Janakkala. The channel shares information about the municipality’s current and everyday matters, such as upcoming events and the most important news. The publication frequency is moderate — a few messages per week. The WhatsApp channel does not replace the municipality’s other communication channels, and the website remains the primary channel for news and other announcements.

– Nearly 90 percent of Finns use WhatsApp weekly, making it the most far-reaching of the social media channels. In addition, an advantage of WhatsApp is that algorithms do not affect the visibility of messages in the same way as in other social media services, says the Head of Communications Leena Joutsenniemi.

What is a WhatsApp channel?

Communication on a WhatsApp channel is one-way, so messages cannot be replied to. However, messages can be reacted to using preset emojis. Advantages of the channel include speed and the protection of followers’ privacy: other followers cannot see who is following the channel or who has reacted to content.

The broadcast channels of WhatsApp, the messaging service owned by Meta, were introduced in Finland in September 2023. WhatsApp channels are popular, and, among others, various media, companies and authorities have adopted them.
