The municipal council decided to close four schools

The municipal council decided (April 27, 2026) that a referendum called for by a citizens’ initiative on the school network will not be held. The matter was voted on and the municipal executive’s proposal to reject the initiative became the council’s decision by 21–12.

After a long, multi-hour discussion the municipal council decided after a vote, 17–16, that Heinäjoki School will be closed on August 1, 2026 in accordance with the objectives for balancing the finances set by Janakkala municipal council on January 26, 2026, § 4;

Vähikkälä School was decided to be closed by 19–14, effective August 1, 2026.

Tanttala School was decided to be closed by 18–15, effective August 1, 2027.

Virala School was decided to be closed by 17–16, effective August 1, 2027.

At the same time it was decided that the council’s earlier decision of June 3, 2024, § 69, item 1, is no longer in force. That provision concerns the pupil limit under which a school is closed if its pupil count is below 28 for two consecutive years and the pupil forecast for the following year is below 28 pupils.

The meeting’s other items were approved as proposed.

The minutes of the meeting will be published here after verification (in Finnish).
