The education committee proposes to stick to the 28-student limit

The education committee considered on April 8, 2026 a proposal to close four schools (Tanttala, Virala, Heinäjoki and Vähikkälä) and decided to propose to the municipal executive and municipal council that, regarding school closures, the threshold of 28 pupils be maintained. According to this, a school is closed when the school’s pupil count is below 28 for two consecutive years and the next year’s pupil forecast is below 28 pupils.

Regarding Tanttala school, the committee proposes that the council decide on the future of Tanttala school next time in autumn 2028 based on an updated pupil forecast.

All decisions were made following a vote, by 5-4.
