Modification work on Suojärvi’s bottom weir begins

Restoration work is about to begin at the bottom weir of Lake Suojärvi. The old stone-built weir will be demolished and, next to it, a new, gentler bottom weir will be constructed from land using a long-boom excavator. The project will raise the mean water level of Lake Suojärvi.

According to the current estimate, work will begin in the first or second week of June 2026. The preliminary estimate for the duration is approximately 2–3 weeks.

The aim of the restoration project is to replace the old weir structure, which obstructs fish migration, with a new, gentler bottom weir. The project is driven by the need to improve the hydrological conditions of the watercourse and by the goal of removing migration barriers in accordance with the water management action program.

The project is part of regional cooperation to improve the condition of connected waterways; it also promotes biodiversity and offers concrete solutions for improving the condition of waterways.
