The Nature-wise Municipalities network aims to curb biodiversity loss, promote biodiversity, and reduce activities that harm nature, while also comprehensively developing the nature activities of municipalities. Among Finnish municipalities, Janakkala was the first to send its application to join the Nature-wise Municipalities network on May 30, 2023.

Janakkala has four years to meet the network’s criteria after being accepted as a member. The network enhances the municipalities’ efforts and policies to combat biodiversity loss, through which the municipality credibly commits to reducing the harmful effects of its operations on nature and promoting biodiversity. In addition to its own operations, the Nature-wise municipality commits to influencing local actors such as residents, businesses, agricultural and forestry entrepreneurs, and recreational residents, in a way that increases awareness of biodiversity among local actors.

The measures for climate action and biodiversity work will later be compiled into the Climate Monitor tool, from which residents can also track the progress of actions.
