Vähikkälä

Vähikkälä is part of a culturally and historically significant heritage landscape, and the Kirkkoportintie running through the village has been in use since the Middle Ages. Vähikkälä has about 400 residents and around 300 summer cottages, many of which are in use year-round.

The vibrant core of the village is the functioning and original building of a log village school that has been in operation for over 138 years (completed in 1882). The preservation of school activities in the village has led the residents to work closely together for decades. Since 2014, determined development work for the village and the school has been carried out, with the active participants in Vähikkälä changing to a younger generation. The cooperation between the school and the village has provided students with new learning experiences and shared school days with villagers. Nevertheless, Vähikkälä school will be closed as of August 1, 2026 by decision of the Municipal Council (April 27, 2026, Section 27).

Collaboration among the various actors in the village has successfully directed activities towards revitalizing the village. The goal has been to bring the Seuratalo (Community house) closer to the villagers and to develop the activities taking place at the Seuratalo. In 2021, a hut was completed by the shores of lake Valajärvi for visitors’ free use.

Vähikkälän väljämä

The village association Vähikkälän väljämä has actively worked for the preservation of the village school. The purpose of the association is to promote cooperation among residents, improve the living conditions and enjoyment of the village.
