Family exercise means physical activity that the whole family and close circle — from toddlers to teens, parents, grandparents, godparents, and friends — can enjoy together. It’s about being active as a group, with adults participating just as much as children.

Family exercise can be informal daily movement based on the opportunities in your surroundings, indoors or outdoors. It can also include organized and goal-oriented activities, family sports days arranged by communities or companies, or being active together during holidays. What matters most is shared interaction and movement in a way that considers participants of different ages and ability levels.

Family-friendly exercise that fits into everyday life can reach a wide variety of families — including adults who may not be very active otherwise. The aim is to find natural ways to move and spend time together, boosting the well-being of the whole family.

Family physical activity is quality time that supports children’s social, emotional, and physical development — and gives adults unforgettable moments too. In family groups, adults and children meet others, and parents gain valuable peer support in their parenting journey.

We have designed a Christmas calendar for family exercise, where each day has its own fun and activating task. The purpose of the calendar is to bring joy of movement together to families during December. Download the Christmas calendar for your family from here (in Finnish).

You can pick up ready-printed bingo sheets and an activity chart from libraries or swimming halls to help increase shared daily exercise. You can also print the materials from below:

Together as a family towards an active daily life project

This page has been produced as part of the Together as a family towards an active daily life project in 2024. The project has received state funding for promoting an active lifestyle from the Regional State Administrative Agency for Southern Finland. The content of the project has been designed to fit into the Families on the Move program, which is part of the national Promotion of Physical Activity.

The goal is to increase overall activity among children and young people. Families are encouraged to be more active together and influence the physical fitness development of children and young people.

The project aims to enhance the municipality’s sports communication and highlight family exercise opportunities while increasing awareness of the importance of daily activity. Various municipal divisions and the Oma Häme wellbeing services county will be involved in the project. The sports services will be responsible for organizing the project, while other partners will act as links in reaching the target group.
