Collection policy
Principles
The Janakkala municipal library offers a wide range of materials for its customers. Through our collection, we provide everyone with an equal opportunity for reading, education, experiencing adventures, and maintaining lifelong learning.
Our collection is organized for ease of use so that accessing it is as effortless as possible for our customers.
Acquisition
The library’s collection is an essential part of library operations. Therefore, it is important to acquire new materials in a diverse manner. Our primary selection criteria are the demand for materials, their relevance, and quality. We also consider the needs of different customer groups and regional characteristics within the collection.
Our library acquires both printed and electronic materials. Books, magazines, movies, console games, and music materials are at the center of our collection. For electronic use, we acquire both fiction and nonfiction literature as well as domestic and foreign magazines. When acquiring materials, we pay attention to copyright and usability.
Removal
From time to time, we need to remove materials from our collections. The grounds for removal include low usage rates, poor condition, and obsolescence of the materials. Classic works are retained, and outdated materials are updated when possible to better meet today’s informational needs.
Removed materials are sold during an annual clearance sale campaign. Materials that are not suitable for sale are recycled.
Availability
Our library’s materials can be found at the web address https://vanamo.finna.fi/. In the online library, it is possible to view your customer information, renew loans, and make reservations for desired materials.
Borrowing and reserving materials is free of charge in the Vanamo libraries. If the material you are looking for is not available in Vanamo libraries, it is possible to borrow it from other libraries through interlibrary loan. Interlibrary loans are subject to a fee.
We strive to expedite the availability of materials by setting a 14-day loan period for the most requested fiction. We also acquire additional copies of the most reserved materials as needed.
Development
The library’s collection is developed using various assessment methods. The collection is evaluated by mapping its usage rates, age, and demand. Customers can participate in the development of the collection by providing feedback and suggesting materials for acquisition.
Donations
We accept material donations at our discretion. Primarily newer fiction and nonfiction literature and foreign-language narrative literature. We do not accept outdated magazines, nonfiction books, or materials whose copyrights prevent lending usage.
Storage
We store a significant amount of requested and culturally significant materials in the library’s storage collection. Materials deemed necessary for library users are retained whenever possible. Storage materials can be inquired about at the main library’s customer service point or reserved through the online library.
