Turenki ponds
The Turenki Ponds are one of the best-known birdwatching sites in the Kanta-Häme region. The rear ponds are best accessed from Liinalammintie and Ratatie, while the front ponds can be approached from Harvialantie. Originally part of the now-closed Turenki sugar factory, the ponds offer two distinct landscapes: the open terrain of the front ponds and the more wooded surroundings of the rear ponds, which are especially known for nighttime songbirds.
The area is a year-round destination. In winter, the front ponds often host flocks of European goldfinches and lesser spotted woodpeckers, while waterfowl can be seen overwintering near the outflows of the rear ponds. During the breeding season, the site supports an interesting range of species — water rail, black-necked grebe, little ringed plover, and red-backed shrike nest here almost annually.
In spring and autumn, the variety of waterbirds and passerines is particularly impressive. The front ponds are legendary among shorebird enthusiasts.
Over the years, rare sightings at the ponds have included American wigeon, glossy ibis, tawny pipit, hoopoe, pied wheatear, serin, black redstart, European turtle dove, multiple wood sandpipers, black-tailed godwit, barred warbler, and little bunting.
