Traffic safety
Promoting wise mobility choices, in terms of traffic safety, health and environmental sustainability, is one of the key tasks of the municipality. Each department has its own tasks and opportunities to promote wise mobility choices among residents of the municipality. Collaboration between different departments is necessary and natural for many mobility-related challenges. The goal is to provide every resident with the abilities, skills, and motivation to make responsible and safety-oriented mobility choices.
The task of the municipality’s technical and environmental services is to ensure a living environment that promotes health, well-being, and safety for both residents and passersby. The planning of the municipality’s services and land use planning largely defines how housing, basic services, and other important daily activities are situated, and how safely and meaningfully mobility by different modes of transport, especially by walking and cycling, can be managed. Solutions in the traffic environment that support safe and responsible mobility, as well as public transport services, are created in cooperation with the municipality and the Uusimaa Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY).
The various sectors of the municipality together are responsible for traffic education and communication. The knowledge and values of wise mobility and the basic competencies for surviving in traffic are established through lifelong traffic education, which ideally starts before a person is born and continues uninterrupted until senior age. The starting points for traffic education work are good, as it is possible to reach almost all mobility groups through the municipality’s services and information channels.
Wise mobility team (traffic safety team)
In the municipality of Janakkala, there operates a cross-administrative Wise mobility team (traffic safety team), whose task is to promote responsible and safe mobility. The team includes representation from various municipal departments as well as from the police, Traffic Safety Agency, and transport operators. The team meets 4-5 times a year.
The focus of the traffic safety team’s activities is on measures related to traffic education and communication, but it also addresses the need for improvements in the traffic environment and the targeting of traffic control. If you wish to bring issues related to traffic safety or other mobility-related problems to the attention of the working group, please utilize the municipality’s feedback channel (select traffic safety as the theme).
The main tasks of the team:
- Ensure that traffic safety and the influencing factors, as well as the needs of different age and mobility groups, are taken into account in all municipal activities, plans, and strategies.
- Activate traffic safety work across all administrative sectors and their subordinate units and stakeholders.
- Plan, organize, and implement local traffic education, awareness-raising, and communication measures: events, campaigns, training sessions, seminars, information sessions, etc.
- Promote the implementation of improvements in the traffic environment and respond to traffic arrangement proposals and feedback from residents and stakeholders.
- Disseminate information about the benefits of sustainable and safe mobility and the content of preventive work among residents, decision-makers, municipal staff, and local stakeholders.
- Monitor the development of the municipality’s traffic safety situation (accidents, traffic attitudes) and mobility habits (the role of sustainable mobility).
