Climate work in Janakkala
The Janakkala municipal council decided in 2023 to initiate the drafting of a climate plan and a biodiversity program. The climate plan has been completed, and the drafting of the biodiversity program (lumo) is underway. The program is expected to be completed by spring 2025. The council also decided that the measures of the climate plan and the lumo program will be transferred to the Climate Monitor tool.
In Janakkala, the Climate Monitor tool is referred to as the Environmental Monitor of Janakkala, as it will include measures from both the climate plan and the lumo program.
With the environmental monitoring tool, residents, municipal staff, and decision-makers can track the progress of the municipality’s climate and biodiversity work. Each measure has a contact person responsible for updating the status of the measure in the environmental monitor. Additionally, the environmental monitor facilitates communication about residents’ opportunities to participate in climate and nature related matters.
Janakkala is also involved in the Häme Climate Monitor project coordinated by Häme University of Applied Sciences and the Regional Council of Häme. The participating municipalities have committed to the goal of becoming a carbon-neutral region by 2035. The Häme Climate Monitor is the first regional online service that brings together the climate, circular economy, and environmental actions of the organizations involved. All municipalities in Kanta-Häme and other organizations are participating in the Häme Climate Monitor. Over 500 measures have already been recorded in the monitor at the regional level.
