Hämeenkylmänkukka
The most famous plant in Janakkala is undoubtedly the protected Hämeenkylmänkukka. The kylmänkukka is a very rare eastern steppe plant in the Nordic countries. It blooms early in the spring, when its blue flowers stand out well from the other vegetation. The greatest threat to kylmänkukka today is the encroachment of forests and the shading caused by trees. For this reason, the habitats of kylmänkukka are managed by removing trees when necessary.
Linnamäki
Leppäkoskentie, Leppäkoski
The best access to the kylmänkukka population at Linnamäki is from Leppäkoskentie, where there is also a parking space for cars. Stairs built on the steep slope lead to a viewing platform. Movement outside the stairs and wooden platforms should be avoided, as the terrain is easily eroded and the plant population is quite small in size and number of kylmänkukka. The species is very poor at reproducing, so all individual plants are valuable. The area’s forest has been thinned to prevent excessive shading from young growth from damaging the population.
Parking: There is space to park along Leppäkoskentie (around number 650).
Tunturivuori
Myllytie, Turenki
Access to Tunturivuori is possible from all sides via paths formed over decades from Myllytie, Ojalantie, and Sääjärventie. The kylmänkukka population on the ridge area of Tunturivuori is the largest and most vital in Janakkala. The population at Tunturivuori increased as a result of logging done in the area. Logging is carried out without damaging the plants and without covering the logging residues. There are nice outdoor paths at Tunturivuori, and there are great views from the highest points.
Parking: No marked parking spaces.
