We are looking for volunteer tutors for the Läksyhelppi group for speakers of other languages. An orientation will be held on Thursday 22 Oct at 5:00 PM at the main library. Register by 20 Oct: Finnish Red Cross Läksyhelppi volunteer training

The Janakkala shared library project and the municipality’s integration services identified a need for a homework group for adult learners who speak other languages. The Finnish Red Cross Häme district and Janakkala local branch joined the implementation. The Finnish Red Cross Häme district enables the activity to start by training volunteer tutors and supporting the local tutors during the group’s initial phase. Läksyhelppi is one of the Finnish Red Cross’s forms of support for integration, and groups meet in many places within the Häme district. This activity has not existed in Janakkala before, so we hope it will interest new people to join volunteer work.

Finnish is everyday life for a Finn, but for someone who has moved to the country, learning it can be a long and challenging journey. As a volunteer in a Läksyhelppi group you can help exactly where the support of a native speaker is most valuable: by discussing, advising and encouraging with homework. You don’t need to be a teacher; it is enough to be a companion who supports. Learning together creates experiences of success and new perspectives for both the participant and the volunteer. At the same time you get to meet new people and enjoy meaningful voluntary work.
