  • when the school journey for a 1st-2nd grade student in comprehensive education is over three kilometers
    (Educational Committee 15.3.2017 §24)
  • when the school journey for a 3rd-9th grade student in comprehensive education is over five kilometers (POL 32 §)

The school journey is measured along the shortest publicly accessible pedestrian route from the home plot’s gate to the school’s gate.

Based on the danger of the school journey

The assessment of the danger of the school journey utilizes the opinions and assessment guidelines of road and police authorities.

Based on the difficulty and strain of the school journey

When deciding on the organization of transportation, a statement from a doctor or an equivalent expert is required,
where the need for transportation is deemed essential. A doctor or an equivalent expert cannot obligate the organization of transportation with their statement, but the statement is used as expert assistance in decision-making.

General Information about Transportation

In school transportation, existing public transport (scheduled buses) is primarily used.
Pupils using scheduled buses receive a bus ticket (Waltti card) for their trips.

A pupil’s right to school journey benefits or travel support may be limited to only a part of the school year,
for example during winter time or in case of illness.

The school journey of a transport pupil may consist of both organized transportation and a part traveled by the pupil themselves.
In this case, the part traveled by themselves can be a maximum of three kilometers for 1st-2nd graders and five kilometers for others.

The municipality does not organize transportation nor participate in the pupil’s school journey costs when
it concerns enrollment in a school other than the local school.

Pre-school Transportation

A pre-school pupil is entitled to free transportation if the distance from home to the nearest municipal
pre-school is over three kilometers. The right to transportation is applied for using the school transportation application.
