Support for learning and attending school
Support for learning and attending school, as well as student welfare services, form a comprehensive system, which means various support measures, arrangements, and practices. They aim to improve students’ wellbeing and learning, as well as increase the joy of attending school. Support measures can be communal or individual and are planned in cooperation with students and guardians.
The three levels of support for learning and attending school are general, intensified, and special support. The level is determined by the amount and strength of the support measures.
In general support, measures may include:
- Differentiation in instruction: scope, depth, pace of progress
- Remedial teaching, including preventive/remedial instruction
- Support from part-time special education
- Special exam arrangements and assessment methods, such as oral supplements to written exams or extended time
- Clubs and afternoon activities
- Temporary support from a school assistant
- Co-teaching
- Temporary intensive groups based on skill level (e.g. reading and writing groups)
- Collaborative learning
Intensified support means enhancing preventive general support measures both quantitatively and qualitatively, as well as organizing teaching in sufficiently small groups. Forms of support include, among others, differentiation, remedial teaching, various forms of simultaneous teaching, part-time special education, student welfare, and close cooperation with parents.
If the aforementioned support measures are insufficient, the student has the right to special support. Special support consists of special education that supports learning and other support that aids schooling. Special support requires an administrative decision, and education is organized according to a personal plan (HOJKS). The HOJKS is created together with the student and guardians and defines, among other things, the monitoring and evaluation of the student’s progress, the student’s ability to demonstrate their competence in various ways, and pedagogical solutions that support the student, such as teaching methods, study strategies, working and communication methods, as well as learning materials.
Comprehensive education can be completed in many different ways. In Janakkala, the following pathways that consider individual needs are offered for completing comprehensive education: flexible comprehensive education class (JOPO), rehabilitation class, preparatory class for comprehensive education, special classes at Haukankallio School, classes at Varatie School, Aava School, special classes at Seminaari School, special classes at Saarinen School, and hospital school.
