Storage of organic fertilizer products in a stack, post-composting in a stack, and storage of dry manure in a stack in exceptional situations (technical or hygienic reasons) must be reported 14 days before the storage begins to the environmental protection of Janakkala.

For dry manure, the notification is made by the operator at the animal farm (in operation) where manure is generated. For organic fertilizer products, the notification is made by the farm that receives the product.

Notification forms can be obtained from the internet (printable pdf file) and (fillable word file) as well as in paper form or by email from the environmental protection of Janakkala and Häme rural service unit. The completed notification form must be submitted to the environmental protection of Janakkala.

Legislation: Nitrate Regulation

Conditions for stacking

The dry matter content of dry manure or organic fertilizer products must be at least 30%.

Storage must not cause pollution or the risk of pollution to water bodies. Stacking is always prohibited in groundwater areas and flood-prone areas.

The stack must be placed on a load-bearing field area and on sloping land near the upper edge of the field. The stack must not be placed less than 100 meters away from a water body, drainage ditch, or drinking water well, nor less than five meters from a ditch. A layer that absorbs liquids at least 20 centimeters thick must be spread on the bottom of the stack, and the stack must be covered with a tight cover. Additionally, snow must be removed from the stacking site and the surface must be shaped to prevent liquids from entering the environment.

At least one hectare of organic fertilizer product must be placed in one stack, and the maximum allowable amount is the total area of the field. Organic fertilizer stored in the stack must be spread in the year of establishment of the stack, following other regulations stated in the decree. A new stack can be placed on the site where the previous one was located after a two-year interval.

Spreading manure

Spreading manure and organic fertilizer products on fields is prohibited from the beginning of November to the end of March. However, exceptions can be made to the prohibition on spreading manure until the end of November in situations where manure could not be utilized as fertilizer in the field during the growing season due to exceptional weather conditions. Notification of deviation from the spreading time must be made to the environmental protection of Janakkala.

Dry manure and organic fertilizer products with a dry matter content of at least 30 percent can be stored in the field for up to four weeks during the spreading period (April 1 – October 31) while waiting for spreading. Notification to the environmental protection of Janakkala is not required for this.

Manure and organic fertilizer products spread on the surface of the field must be incorporated into the soil within 24 hours of spreading, except for spreading onto crops
