Toivanjoki and the Bird Tower
Vähikkäläntie
Toivanjoelta is home to one of the best bird wetlands in Kanta-Häme. The wetlands of Toivanjoentie are significant both as a resting place for migratory birds and as a breeding area for wetland birds. The wetland was created when the power plant dams built on Tervakoski were raised several times in the 19th and 20th centuries. The banks of Toivanjoentie were repeatedly flooded and developed into their current form.
From the parking area, a trail of about 300 meters leads to the tower, which is easy to walk but occasionally requires boots. The tower offers a view of the wetland, which is traversed by the waterway between Kesijärvi and Alasjärvi, Toivanjoki. Typical bird species that can be observed from the tower include the great white egret, rough-legged buzzard, crane, and curlew. It’s worth visiting the tower also at night or during dusk, as in May and June you can hear the songs and calls of the water rail, great bittern, corncrake, and various warbler species. During migration periods, especially in spring May, you may spot wading birds such as godwits, black-tailed godwits, and snipe from the tower. Along the path leading to the tower, you can listen to the songs of the chiffchaff, willow warbler, and meadow pipit.
