Streets

Pedestrian paths may be adjacent to streets or separate connections between different parts of the municipality. The maintenance of streets and pedestrian paths located within zoning areas is the responsibility of the municipality.

Private roads

  • Unorganized private roads are typically short in length, and their maintenance is the responsibility of the landowners along the road.
  • On organized private roads, the maintenance is managed by a road association, whose members are the landowners along the road.

The municipality of Janakkala provides subsidies for private roads when the private road meets certain conditions. More information on subsidies.

For more information about the maintenance of private roads, see for example the Road Association’s website.

Traffic signs and control devices

According to the Road Traffic Act (Section 71), the municipality places traffic control devices on streets, roadways, squares, and other similar traffic areas.

For private roads or on property areas, the placement of traffic control devices or traffic signs is done by the road manager (road association) or property owner, with the consent of the municipality. Permission can be requested from rural services. Temporary traffic control devices necessary due to the condition of the road or work being done alongside it do not require consent (Road Traffic Act Section 71).
