What should we focus on in Janakkala to ensure that we all do as well as possible?

We are bringing together influencers from Janakkala’s businesses, educational institutions, organizations, and public actors for a dialogue around the municipality’s vitality issues.  During this process, we will jointly create a situation picture and a plan for the development of Janakkala. Can we count on you to join the work!

The work includes three open online events, with one remaining on March 15, 2023, from 9-11 AM.
The theme of the forum is the labor situation based on demographic statistics. Additionally, it is time to consider what concrete actions we will take together as part of the situation picture work under selected themes. The themes are:

Collaboration Culture and Its Structures
How can we enhance dialogue, cooperation, communication, and visibility?

Project Mill
How do we create genuinely development-oriented projects in the area, fully utilize available funding, and find the right and all willing actors for the projects?

Workforce and Education
How can the workforce needs of the business sector and education be better aligned, making the area attractive to talent?

Retention Power
Retention power refers to the measures that keep people and businesses thriving and well in the area. What creates Janakkala’s retention power, and how can it be strengthened?

Entrepreneurial Friendliness and Proactivity
How can we be as entrepreneur-friendly as possible and stay tuned to current phenomena?

The process of creating the situation picture: 1st forum: Cooperation between businesses and educational institutions. 2nd forum: Regional project and development work. Before the final forum, interim work on the situation picture, data production, and preparation. 3rd forum: The area's talent situation. After the forums, compilation of the situation picture and the area's next steps.
Word cloud where cooperation emerges as the most significant.
Janakkala’s vitality is believed to arise from these elements.
Janakkala's SWOT analysis.

Strengths: location as a "city" in the middle of the countryside, entrepreneurial activities, entrepreneurship and agility, early childhood education and housing, entrepreneur-friendly environment.

Weaknesses: public transport, availability of labor, two urban areas (development is expensive), most work in large companies in the area is done on-site (no remote/hybrid work options).

Opportunities: digitalization, proactive development activity, housing and development of the living environment, applications that support remote work.

Threats: Population development and demographic change, passivity in the development of critical municipal actors, transportation connections, study and work opportunities, attractiveness and accessibility in the future.

Additions to strengths from the 2nd forum

  • By better highlighting Janakkala’s offerings; agility, security of supply, and development of farms (city-rurality). Highlight humanity. Build community for people and residents.
  • Through active searching, listening, and being aware of these matters.
  • As cliché as it is, LOCATION is a key issue. The growth of MORE, broadly considering what happens when more businesses come, housing, etc.? Can the municipality’s areas be profiled independently, as different entities?
  • Basic education as an addition
  • Strengths are strongly connected to the success of the entire area. (Areas of Hämeenlinna and Riihimäki). The mentioned good cooperation should also be visible as cooperation across municipal borders. Examples include cooperation in attracting investments to the area, education and recruitment issues, etc. It would be good to develop a forum for planning development projects where the needs of area businesses can be gathered together.

Additions to weaknesses from the 2nd forum

  • Public transport -> development of travel chains, a large part of workers still use their own cars. Availability of labor, may be too emphasized. The Hämeenlinna – Janakkala – Riihimäki area is a labor mobility area. Municipal image can influence housing more than labor availability.
  • The economic structure has developed over history; agriculture is a significant part: new investments and projects are needed to expand the structure. Better elevation of workforce skills.
  • Stagnation is harmful, excessive complacency. Successes are interim goals, not a state achieved.
  • Poor recognition

Additions to threats from the 2nd forum

  • The forest track is a very significant threat.
  • Better transportation connections
  • Unawareness of one’s own state. Not being left “behind”. Neglecting to maintain competitiveness and operational capacity.
  • Many threats can be turned into strengths.

Additions to opportunities from the 2nd forum

  • Could study opportunities be more of an opportunity?
  • Highlighting creative fields. New investments and projects. Joint communication, visibility (municipality + actors).
  • Finding or even creating strengths, particularly new strengths
  • Increasing recognition. Strengths just need to be repeated and repeated. Developing and investing in vitality work, entrepreneurs’ association, JTA, municipality, getting the home base in order, ensuring awareness of all actors about one another and the municipality’s opportunities, being able to assist if inquiries arise. Everyone takes responsibility => creating a network where everyone hunts potential newcomers.
  • Connecting public transport
  • New investments in the area – excellent opportunities due to location – how can our area get broader placement decisions targeted here? Does Janakkala’s marketing belong to this? Can we work more along the growth corridor with neighboring areas? – Building a project forum
