Preparation for school closures

The municipal executive decided on February 16, 2026 to overturn the education committee’s decision and, in accordance with the original proposal recorded in the financial consolidation program, to initiate preparations for the closure of schools so that the Heinäjoki and Vähikkälä schools will be closed in summer 2026 and the Tanttala and Virala schools in summer 2027.
Additionally, the municipal executive requires that the preparations include comprehensive documentation to support decision-making.

A page will be opened on Janakkala’s website to gather all preparation-related material for residents and decision-makers to review.
There is already a lot assembled, since service network planning was launched last May.

An online survey will be conducted in the coming weeks for the guardians of current pupils and for guardians of future children now aged 5–6.
Written requests for statements will be sought, among others, from the parents’ network, the youth council, village associations, committees and the wellbeing services county. Additionally, information and discussion events open to everyone will be organized. The times for these will be announced as soon as arrangements have been agreed.

Each school’s closure decision will be prepared separately through the committee and the municipal executive for the municipal council meeting to be held on April 27, 2026.
