Janakkala’s municipal executive launches an upper secondary school review

The municipal executive will have on its table on February 2, 2026 a proposal to launch a study of upper secondary education and to appoint a working group to advance the matter.

The upper secondary education study will be carried out to assess how the upper secondary school network and upper secondary education should best be organised in the future. As part of preparing the service network plan, it is proposed that the study be prepared together with the Tavastia education consortium. The study will evaluate factors affecting upper secondary activities such as changes in pupil numbers, financial aspects, the quality and availability of teaching, administration, legislation and state steering, as well as long-term planning.

– Now is a suitable time to prepare the upper secondary education study. We will gain useful additional information and alternative models for the service network plan. At the same time we can consider ways to increase the appeal of Janakkala’s current upper secondary school. Currently more than 100 residents of Janakkala attend upper secondary school in Hämeenlinna. Could they in the future choose to attend the local upper secondary school in their home municipality?, asks chief executive Riikka Moilanen.

Janakkala is one of the member municipalities of the Tavastia education consortium. Tavastia provides, among other things, the upper secondary school services for Hattula and Hämeenlinna.

Harviala partial master plan up for approval

The municipal executive is also promoting the Harviala partial master plan. The general objective of the plan is to design the land use of the area comprehensively, taking into account current functions and development needs. Several changes have been made to the plan proposal after the public display, such as:

  • Designated the area between Sorsimonpiha and the Hiidenjoki entirely as a local recreational area.
  • Added an occurrence area for the moor frog.
  • Added new indicative street alignments for new residential areas to be subject to detailed planning.
  • Added the need for pedestrian and cycling connections along Alikartano road towards Hämeenlinna.

– The plan reinforces the area’s distinctive character, which arises from the manor’s history, the residential environment and the recreational use opportunities of the Hiidenjoki river. The area has growth potential and, in the long term, the re-opening of Harviala station will also be made possible, says chair of the municipal executive Reijo Löytynoja.

Employment situation to be monitored more closely

In addition, the sub-committee for group governance and vitality proposes that the municipal executive begin regularly monitoring developments in employment and the costs to the municipality resulting from unemployment.

– In this unemployment situation and given the challenges in municipal finances, regular monitoring is very important. The new task assigned to municipalities, namely the responsibility to organise employment services, also requires continuous development of operations, emphasizes Löytynoja.
