Avian influenza detected in Janakkala
In Janakkala, highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 virus was found in two mute swans in November 2025. Poultry keepers in Janakkala and nearby areas are asked to take note. The Finnish Food Authority recommends keeping poultry indoors in areas where avian influenza occurs. It is advisable to keep poultry water and feed indoors to prevent contamination from droppings of infected wild birds. Poultry keepers are also urged to monitor the health and mortality of their own poultry.
Avian influenza can easily spread from wild birds to poultry both through direct contact and via secretions. The virus can also be transmitted by people or equipment contaminated with the virus. If you keep poultry or pet birds, avoid handling sick or dead wild birds due to the risk of infection.
Contact the municipal veterinarian if you notice symptoms related to avian influenza in your poultry, such as lethargy, loss of appetite, nasal discharge or coughing, increased mortality, or changes in egg production. A decrease in water and feed consumption may also be a sign of viral infection.
Report to the municipal veterinarian if you observe a mass mortality of birds. In the Etelä-Häme area, contact the surveillance veterinarians at tel. 040 330 5777 or 040 630 0077. A mass mortality indicative of avian influenza is considered to be more than five dead waterfowl or more than ten other dead birds found. Single large dead birds of prey or more than one dead swan in the same location can also indicate avian influenza. Birds will be examined by the Finnish Food Authority if necessary.
Some avian influenza viruses can also infect humans. However, infections are very rare.
