A rare spruce is protected in Mallinkainen

A more than 130-year-old spruce located on private land in Mallinkainen will be designated as protected. The spruce to be protected is 31 meters tall and the tree’s trunk diameter at breast height is almost one meter (90 cm) and the stump diameter is as much as 1.5 meters. The basis for protection is the rarity of the spruce. The landowner has applied for the spruce to be designated as protected under Section 95 of the Nature Conservation Act. Janakkala municipal environmental protection inspected the property and examined the item proposed for protection on December, 11 2025.

According to Section 95 of the Nature Conservation Act, a tree, group of trees, glacial erratic or other comparable natural formation that, because of its beauty, rarity, landscape significance, scientific value or other similar reason is in need of special protection, may be designated as a natural monument. The designation of a natural monument located on privately owned land is decided by the municipality at the owner’s application or with the owner’s consent. The municipality must ensure that a natural monument on privately owned land is marked in a clearly visible manner. A designated natural monument must not be damaged or defiled.

The permit sub-committee decided in its meeting on January 21, 2026 to designate the spruce indicated in the application and located on the property as a natural monument under Section 95 of the Nature Conservation Act. The municipality will mark natural monuments in the field in a clearly distinguishable manner.
