A large plot has been reserved for a data center in Rastikangas, Janakkala.
The project company of Winda Energy has reserved a plot in Janakkala at the MORE-Rastikangas business area. The plot at Välirasti 2 is the largest commercial plot in Janakkala, measuring 22.42 hectares, with a building right of 112,110 m2.
The plan is to build a data center on the plot with an estimated IT capacity of approximately 100 MW. The data center investment is at least €450 million. The data center is planned to be built in two phases. Construction of the first phase will begin in 2027 and be completed by the end of 2028, and the second phase will be commissioned no later than 2030.
The project company is backed by Winda Energy Oy and the project’s partner company is Gi21, which has 20 years of experience operating data centers in Europe.
The planned data center project represents state-of-the-art technology specifically designed for the high computing power requirements of artificial intelligence (AI). The project’s investor/owner will operate the data center itself, aiming for long-term operation of at least 30–40 years.
– The Rastikangas data center project is a significant step for us toward building state-of-the-art digital infrastructure in Finland. Janakkala was chosen for its excellent conditions – a stable power grid, good accessibility and a developable plot provide a strong foundation for a long-term investment, says managing director Tuomas Hooli
Finland, for its part, is an attractive location for data centers because of political and power grid stability as well as a favorable climate.
Regional economic impacts will be reflected in the municipality’s tax revenues and employment. The employment effects during the construction period total more than 1,000 person-years, consisting of both direct workforce and indirect demand for labour. The estimate of long-term employment effects is approximately 30–40 local specialists during operation.
– The project is extremely significant for the municipality and positive in its overall impacts. It strengthens the municipality’s vitality, supports the area’s development and demonstrates that the municipality is seen as a credible location and investment environment even at times when new investments are not easily realised. Projects like this are of great importance for the municipality’s attractiveness and future growth prospects, says technical director Harri Vierikka
