Röyhynsuo
Röyhynsuo mire was originally drained to promote forest growth. Later, it was taken into use for peat production, which is still ongoing today. The site also includes a bird wetland created by Vapo (a Finnish energy and peat company), which has become a significant birdwatching area. During migration seasons, the wetland attracts large flocks of geese.
Next to Röyhynsuo flows the Puujoki River, which merges with the waters of Lake Kernaalanjärvi at Vettenjakamo and continues downstream as the Hiidenjoki River. The area is also home to Janakkala’s only “sea”, Asikonmeri, a small lake that has become separated from the river system. The surroundings of Vettenjakamo are likewise valuable bird habitats.
There is a birdwatching tower at Röyhynsuo built by Vapo. However, access to the tower runs through an active peat production area. During the production season, it is important to watch out for machinery and wear a yellow reflective vest for safety.
