The old Tervakoski coeducational school opens as a demolition art exhibition
The old community school of Tervakoski will celebrate the opening of the demolition art exhibition “Layers – old and new stories meet” with an open event on October 9th at 18:00.
Schooling in the building ended with the completion of the school center Valo next door, and since then, the interior has been dressed in a new colorful attire.
The largest art collections are managed by the Street Art Collective Jälki ry and the Turenki-based ITE artist Onni Laine, who showcases the latest collections of his ITE art alias WeaPeaFoundation. His works are uniquely strange and insightful; another’s junk is Onni’s art.
Jälki ry has been working on graffiti culture-inspired painting art in the school with five members and a few visitors.

– We have put effort especially in the large hall. A circus-themed space has been created on the stage, and elsewhere there is a Tervakoski-themed piece inspired by the locality. In addition, we have continued the previous paintings of the students, filling the entire space, Jukka Sinda says.
– We are also making smaller works in the corridors as much as we can, and there will also be a sculpture made of paint cans in the hall.
Sinda mentions that the group has enjoyed working in a neat and warm indoor environment, as street art is usually done at the mercy of the weather.
– This has been a fun and informal project for us, we work out of love for the art form.
Members of the street art collective can be met at the opening, and they have also promised to guide school groups.
Additionally, the space features works by Vilma Pyyhtiä and Mirka Virtanen and art created by Venla Lappalainen with her students. Youth services as well as Tervakoski schools and early childhood education have also contributed to the overall project.
– The works are scattered throughout the school; all places that are not locked can be explored to find art, says the project coordinator, special youth worker Satu Punkari.
– It has been a pleasure to create something entirely new. The workload has sometimes been enormous, but the project has also given a lot. Encounters with various outstanding individuals, excitement, and many solutions to challenges. Sometimes I just wander around the school admiring the old and new works and how their worlds meet. I am eagerly looking forward to the exhibition, Punkari adds.
