Labor market training is free education for those receiving unemployment benefits. The goal of professional labor market training is often to complete a basic, professional, or specialized vocational qualification or a part of a qualification. In many different fields, further or supplementary training is also provided.

Who is professional labor market training for?

Professional labor market training is primarily intended for unemployed or at-risk adults who have completed their compulsory education.

Career coaching and entrepreneurial training are organized for those considering entrepreneurship or intending to become entrepreneurs.

If you do not find suitable training in the offerings, please contact your responsible official. You can assess whether training is possible to obtain as an individual study place.

You can find available labor market trainings here. With the Training Watch service, you can subscribe to receive information about new upcoming labor market trainings via email.

Support for self-directed education is full-time study supported by unemployment benefits, which can be granted for a maximum of 24 months per study module. Studies must be agreed upon in advance with your responsible official, who will determine whether the requirements for granting support are met. Support cannot be granted, for example, if you have resigned from your job solely to start self-directed studies. The maximum period for unemployment benefits also applies during studies.

You can receive unemployment benefits during studies if you are

  • registered as a job seeker and your job search is active
  • at least 25 years old
  • assessed by the responsible official as being in need of training and studying improves your professional skills and opportunities in the labor market
  • agreed in the employment plan to support studies with unemployment benefits before starting the studies

The studies supported by self-directed education must lead to:

  • a vocational qualification, professional qualification, or specialized vocational qualification
  • a lower or higher university degree in a university or university of applied sciences
  • the completion of the above-mentioned qualification parts.

Studies can also include additional and supplementary training under the Act on Vocational Education or open university or university of applied sciences education.

Studies leading to a licentiate or doctoral degree cannot be supported with unemployment benefits.

If you want to continue earlier started studies with self-directed education support, they can only be supported with unemployment benefits if there has been at least one year since the interruption of studies. However, this restriction does not apply to studies started during a job or during a period when an employer has provided financial benefits or if the same studies have been pursued as labor market training.

More details and conditions can be found on Labor Market Portal.

An apprenticeship is a good pathway for those who can complete studies independently. An apprenticeship-based employment relationship requires skills and the ability to combine work and studies. Janakkala’s employment services annually support access to the labor market through apprenticeship-based employment for those whose unemployment has prolonged.

The voucher can be granted for individual courses valued at less than 50 euros or as a general study card valued at 50 euros.
