What Is an Accident?

An accident is a sudden, external event causing bodily injury that occurs against the will of the insured. An accident also includes drowning, heat stroke, sunburn, frostbite, gas poisoning, injuries caused by sudden changes in air pressure, and poisoning from substances consumed by mistake.

Reporting an Accident and Caring for the Injured

In the event of an accident, a person designated by the insured at the school or early childhood education will file a loss report with the insurance company.

A guardian can take the child for treatment to public or private healthcare, no later than 14 days after the accident. If treatment occurs in the private sector, the guardian must initially pay the costs themselves and seek reimbursement from the insurance company afterward.

If a car or other motor vehicle is involved in the accident, the medical costs are covered by traffic insurance, not accident insurance.

Costs Covered by Insurance

Insurance covers, among other things:

  • Doctor’s fees, diagnostic and treatment procedures prescribed by a doctor in a healthcare facility (including health center, outpatient clinic, and hospital daily care fees)
  • Prescription medications prescribed by a doctor for the respective accident.
  • Costs for treating damaged teeth due to the accident (Note: Damage caused to the teeth while biting is not covered by this insurance.)
  • Necessary and reasonable travel expenses (use of personal car at 0.35€/km)
  • Costs for necessary, doctor-prescribed physiotherapy following surgery or casting for an accidental injury, limited to one total treatment course of 10 sessions.
  • Costs for the first acquisition of a necessary medical aid.
  • Clothing damaged during first aid treatment.
  • Repair costs for glasses, hearing aids, and dental prosthetics broken in connection with the accident, or if repair is impossible, the procurement costs for similar replacements.

Costs Not Covered by the Insurance

  • Accidental damage caused by a defect, injury, or illness that the insured had (e.g., an epileptic falls and injures their knee due to a seizure or a person has a structural tendency for knee dislocation, leading to a fall or injury).
  • Speech, psycho-, nutrition, or occupational therapy, psychological or neuropsychological therapy, or other comparable therapy, research, or treatment.
  • Rehabilitation.
  • Cosmetic treatment, examination, procedure, or surgery.
  • Damage caused to a tooth or dental prosthesis while biting, even if influenced by an external factor.
  • Permanent medical aids.
  • Treatment costs due to insect or tick bites or stings.

Applying for Benefits

For claims processing, If always needs an accident report from the insured, i.e., the municipality of Janakkala.

The guardian applies for reimbursement for any costs incurred (e.g., travel expenses) at www.if.fi/henkilovahinko > Public community accidents.

Expense receipts must be submitted only if specifically requested. For larger treatment costs, advance payment commitments can be requested. Once approved, the invoice for treatment will be sent directly to If, and neither the insured nor the guardian will have to cover the incurred costs. Payment commitments can be requested by calling 010 19 16 20 or sending a message to maksusitoumukset@if.fi.

School transport due to an accident

If school transport is needed due to the accident, a doctor’s certificate is required for the necessary school transport. The guardian fills out the school transport application and submits the doctor’s certificate to the education office’s transport planner.
