Collection Policy
Principles
The Janakkala municipal library offers a diverse range of materials for its customers. Through our collections, we provide everyone with an equal opportunity to engage in reading, education, experiencing events, and maintaining lifelong learning.
Our collections are organized for use in such a way that utilizing them is as effortless as possible for customers.
Acquisition
The library’s collection is an essential part of library services. Therefore, it is important to acquire new materials in a diverse manner. Our primary selection criteria are the demand for materials, relevance, and quality. We also consider the needs of different customer groups and regional characteristics in our collection.
Our library acquires both printed and electronic materials. Books, magazines, movies, console games, and music materials are at the center of our collection. For electronic use, we acquire fiction and non-fiction literature as well as domestic and foreign magazines. In the acquisition of materials, copyright and usability are taken into account.
Deletion
From time to time, we need to remove materials from our collections. The criteria for removal include low usage, poor condition, and obsolescence of the material. Classic works are preserved, and outdated materials are updated whenever possible to better meet today’s information needs.
Deleted materials are sold during an annual clearance sale campaign. Materials deemed unsuitable for sale are recycled.
Availability
Our library materials can be found at the web address https://vanamo.finna.fi/. In the online library, it is possible to view one’s customer information, renew loans, and make reservations for desired materials.
Borrowing and reserving materials from Janakkala libraries is free of charge. A regional reservation from other Vanamo libraries (libraries in Hattula and Hämeenlinna) costs €2.50 per reservation. If the material you are looking for is not found in Vanamo libraries, it is possible to arrange interlibrary loans from other libraries. The fee for interlibrary loans is at least €6 per loan or according to the invoice presented by the lending library.
We aim to expedite material availability by setting a loan period of 14 days for the most requested fiction. We also acquire supplementary copies of the most reserved materials as needed.
Development
The library’s collection is developed using various assessment methods. The collection is evaluated by mapping its usage rates, age, and demand. Customers can participate in the development of the collection by providing feedback and making requests for material acquisition.
Donations
We accept material donations at our discretion. We primarily accept newer fiction and non-fiction literature as well as foreign language narrative literature. We do not accept outdated magazines, non-fiction books, or materials whose copyrights prevent lending.
Storage
We store a significant amount of in-demand and culturally significant material in the library’s storage collection. Materials necessary for library users are preserved whenever possible. Storage materials can be requested at the main library’s customer service point or reserved through the online library.
