The referendum initiative proceeds to decision-making

The municipality of Janakkala has received a citizens’ initiative (received by the register office on March 11, at 17:08) to hold a referendum on preserving the Janakkala school network in its entirety at least until 2030.

The initiative requires careful preparation and investigation before decision-making, and it will be submitted to the municipal executive on April 13, 2026.

Organizing an advisory referendum requires practical arrangements similar to, for example, municipal or regional elections. The workload, however, is greater because the state does not provide preparatory funding in the same way as for other elections.

Key election arrangements include, among others:

  • appointing election officials,
  • deciding on the timing and formulating the question,
  • preparing the list of eligible voters,
  • designating advance voting locations and polling stations for the actual voting day,
  • designing and producing voting materials,
  • recruiting and training election staff,
  • communication about the vote,
  • conducting and supervising the voting, and
  • counting the votes and confirming the result.

The municipal council will decide on organising the referendum on April 27, 2026. According to the meeting calendar, the meeting is the first one immediately following the submission of the initiative.

The referendum item will be considered before the item planned for the same meeting concerning the closure of four schools. If it is decided to hold the referendum, decision-making on the closure of schools will be postponed to a later date.
